I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Fake it ’till you Make it,” but have you heard “Fake it ’till you Become it?” What does that phrase mean to you?
When I first started blogging I was afraid people wouldn’t take me seriously as a blogger. In fact, I was even embarrassed to refer to myself as a blogger for a long time. This was due to the lack of confidence I felt within. However, one day I discovered one very inspirational Ted Talk, and it completely changed my way of thinking. The speech was primarily on stress, and how to lower cortisol levels and increase testosterone through power posing. So what Professor Amy Cuddy PhD was pretty much saying was that if you’re about to give a big presentation, or you’re on a job interview and feel anxious, nervous and very stressed out you should give yourself two minutes in the restroom, in your car, or wherever and practice power posing for two minutes. These are poses that will make you feel confident and in power. She states that non verbal behavior, such as the way we stand and sit, affect the way in which we feel about ourselves. Meaning, our bodies can change our minds. I was watching her speech and I thought it was very interesting. However, what truly struck me and made me listen to what she was saying was when she said to “fake it ’til you make it” when you’re unsure about yourself and don’t think you are capable of doing something magnificent. Then she moves on to say to “fake it ’til you become it.” I watched her speech a bunch of times after that, cried sometimes because I identified with the traits she was explaining people with a lack of self-confidence have, it was like she was describing me. I feel so grateful to have found her speech, she gave me something so valuable. I put it into practice right away. Of course in the beginning it felt dumb to do. There were times when I was putting myself down in my mind (this blog isn’t going anywhere, no one is going to read it, you’re not pretty enough, just get a typical 9 to 5 job, etc), but I persisted. I kept doing my wonder woman poses before taking my pictures and definitely before events. I made sure to take up space when I sat down with other bloggers and potential sponsors, and make my voice heard. This completely changed my life. Personally now I feel like I am a blogger and do belong in this business, and am definitely worth following.
I say all that to say that it’s never too late to follow your dreams. Even if they seem super crazy and out of this world. The bigger your dreams, the bigger and better they will be when they come true. If you’d like to watch Professor Cuddy’s speech it’s right here.
If you can imagine it, you can achieve it;
If you can dream it, you can become it.
